Kirby Smart and Georgia Bulldogs get exciting news on top cornerback recruit, but national rival is pushing to flip him
Elite cornerback recruit Donte Wright earns his fifth star, but Georgia Bulldogs might struggle to keep him committed
The Georgia Bulldogs’ recruiting machine is off to a fast start with their 2027 class. Head coach Kirby Smart and company already have five players committed, including three blue chip talents who rank among the best talents in the nation.
Now, one of those blue chip recruits just earned his fifth star as the recruiting services continue to shuffle their rankings amid further research and study this offseason. Can Georgia actually hold on to their new five star?
Cornerback Donte Wright now rated as five-star recruit for Georgia Bulldogs
Donte Wright, the newly minted five star cornerback from Long Beach, California was the first commit to coach Smart and his Georgia Bulldogs for their 2027 recruiting class way back in June of 2025. This track star (sub-10.7-second 100 meter times to his name) with elite coverage stats has been rising up recruiting boards for some time now, but he’s finally officially a five-star player according to 247 Sports.
This is great news for Georgia’s 2027 recruiting class. They already have five star running back recruit Kemon Spell committed (flipped from Penn State). Now they have yet another five star to — in theory — lure other top talents to Athens.
However, based on what a number of recruiting insiders are hearing (Tom Loy of 247Sports most recently on Wednesday afternoon) it seems that multiple national rivals are pushing to flip him. The most prominent and likely problem for Georgia? Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks.
Will Donte Wright stay committed to Georgia or flip?
Wright plays his high school ball about 1,500 miles closer to Eugene, Oregon than he does Athens, Georgia. The now-five-star cornerback has visited with the Ducks more than he has the Bulldogs already. He has an official visit with Oregon slated to take place in June (after his scheduled visits to UCLA and Georgia in May).
It seems the tides have already been shifting toward Oregon for a while. Now that the collective industry intel is pointing to a possible flip to the Ducks too? It looks like coach Smart and his staff may have their work cut out for them in keeping him committed.
Any decision to flip from Georgia to Oregon seems a bit short-sighted considering the Bulldogs’ long recent track record of sending defensive backs to the pros compared to the Ducks. Georgia has sent 12 defensive backs off to be selected in the NFL Draft in the last five years alone. Oregon has sent just seven, and just one of them was a first round pick (Christian Gonzalez, to the New England Patriots).
Georgia has the far superior and proven player development. They have the more recent run of on-field success, running deep into the College Football Playoff and winning national championships. Still, Wright may lean toward Oregon for some reason. Hopefully coach Smart can keep him locked in, because having true five star talents at defensive back is what Georgia defenses have been all about in recent years.
