The Oklahoma Sooners pulled off a stunning coup this offseason when they plucked former Dallas Cowboy and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Witten to serve as their tight ends coach, replacing Joe Jon Finley.

Oklahoma completely rebuilt their tight end room via the transfer portal, adding players like Hayden Hansen, Rocky Beers, and Jack Van Dorselaer to overhaul a room with very little upside. Witten immediately hit the ground running as a recruiter, and he has the Sooners in prime position to land an elite playmaker at tight end.

Jason Witten already proving his mettle

There were some questions (or perhaps hesitations) about Witten’s ability as a recruiter after only serving as a high school head coach for a short time.

I think it might be safe to say Witten is acing his first test, putting the Sooners in the driver’s seat for elite 2027 tight end recruit Seneca Driver. Driver, the number-three tight end in the country, is a top-50 player and the No.1 recruit from the state of Kentucky. The 6-foot-6 playmaker boasts the size to stick in-line as a tight end, but unlike many others at his size, Driver boasts the explosive speed to threaten defenses downfield and do damage after the catch.

Rivals.com’s Charles Power called Driver “one of the most physically imposing tight end prospects in the country” with the “potential to be of the most talented prospects we’ve seen at the position.” Last season as a TE/OLB, Driver posted 49 receptions for 875 yds and 11 TDs, and 67 tackles, 10 TFL and 5 INTs with two pick-6s last year.

If Witten and the Sooners can drive(r)(see what I did there) this bus home, it would be one of the most significant recruiting wins in recent history for the program. Witten is already breathing life into the tight end room, and the future in the room seems brighter than it has in nearly a decade.
