Former Tennessee Vols defensive back Boo Carter has a position coach with the Colorado Buffaloes that UT football fans are very familiar with.

Carter, who transferred to Colorado after being dismissed from Tennessee’s football team last season, is being coached in Boulder by former Ohio State Buckeyes safety Vonn Bell.

Bell was heavily recruited by Tennessee during the 2013 recruiting cycle. And at one point on National Signing Day in 2013, it looked like Bell was about to sign with the Vols (which many believe was the result of a “leak” by then Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer).

The former Buckeye recently joined Colorado’s staff as a safeties coach after spending nine seasons in the NFL.

Vonn Bell comments on Boo Carter’s progression so far at Colorado

Bell spoke to reporters this week at Colorado and was asked about Carter.

The 31 year old assistant coach, who is from Chattanooga (as is Carter), said things started out rocky for the former Vol.

Bell, however, also noted that Carter is one of the most talented players he’s seen in a long time.

“It’s been good,” Bell said of Carter’s spring so far. “It started a little rocky, but he’s embracing those challenges. He’s been in the office every day, pressing forward every day, striving every day to be the best version of himself. And it’s showing on the field.

“He had a great day today. Made a play on the ball today. I wanted him to get an interception, but you know, my goal is always high. It’s a high standard for him — because he’s so talented. The sky’s the limit for him. He’s got to keep on building those bricks every day, day by day — mentality and the process. And like I said, he’s one of the most talented guys I’ve seen in a long time.”

Carter’s talent has never been questioned. But for him to reach his potential, he’ll have to be far more consistent and locked in than he was at Tennessee last season when he essentially wasted a year of his college career.
