Kansas City Chiefs LB Drue Tranquill did what he needed to do to help the team — and avoid becoming a salary cap casualty
Drue Tranquill took one for the team, agreeing to a pay cut to stay with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to a restructured contract with LB Drue Tranquill, which will keep him with the team for the 2026 NFL season.
As first reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Tranquill agreed to a restructured one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Chiefs, reducing his base pay to that amount from the $6 million he was due. The move clears $2.5 million in salary cap space for the upcoming season.
Tranquill was projected as a potential salary cap casualty because releasing him on his old contract would have saved $6 million in salary cap space compared to just $1.5 million in dead money. Most players don’t simply agree to a pay cut, but Tranquill believes in what they’ve built in Kansas City. Chiefs GM Brett Veach first mentioned Tranquill as a player who might not face that fate during the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, a sign they had likely already discussed a reworked deal.
I’m told this move happened before the new league year on March 11, so it doesn’t necessarily indicate any moves are coming or that the team has the $2.5 million in cap space earmarked for anything.
What does this mean for Chiefs’ linebacker situation in 2026
You can probably pencil Tranquill in as one of the Chiefs’ two starting outside linebackers. Tranquill is coming off a season with 103 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a pass defended. Coverage was where he really struggled, allowing 37 receptions on 39 targets and two touchdowns, according to PFF’s charting.
Nick Bolton is expected to remain the starting MIKE linebacker for Kansas City.
Really, it’s just about who is going to join Tranquill and Bolton on the field in base personnel and who will be the team’s top choice in sub packages. Cole Christiansen is the most veteran player at the position on the roster, aside from Bolton and Tranquill. Jeff Bassa, Cooper McDonald, and Brandon George are three rookies who could take on larger roles in 2026. Kam Arnold is probably the wild-card as a reserve/future signing.
What does the Chiefs’ cap space look like after recent NFL free agency moves?
Khyiris Tonga is the only Chiefs’ newest free agent for whom we have a 2026 salary cap number. He’ll count $3.2 million against the salary cap in 2026, which doesn’t make much of a dent in Kansas City’s projected cap space, which currently lands somewhere between $22 million and $24 million. That will change, though. We still need official contract details for Travis Kelce, Tyquan Thornton, Kenneth Walker III, Alohi Gilman, Kader Kohou, and Emari Demercado to get a real estimate of the cap space the Chiefs have available. Remember, the team will need nearly $10 million in cap space to sign their rookie draft class if they keep all their current draft selections.
