It may take the Tennessee Vols baseball program a while to recover from what we saw on Sunday afternoon in Athens.

The Volunteers take game one of a three-game series against the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday before losing game two on Saturday.

Tennessee jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the rubber game on Sunday, but Georgia battled its way back into the game and eventually took the lead (thanks to a five run seventh inning).

The Vols had one final shot to win the game, and for a second it looked like they had taken a late lead.

With two outs in the top of the 9th inning, catcher Stone Lawless connected on what looked like a go-ahead pinch hit home run.

Instead, it was a long flyout.

Lawless, though, celebrated like he hit a no-doubter, even spiking the bat as teammates celebrated in the background.

Just brutal. Blowing a 5-0 lead was bad enough. But Gronk spiking the bat on a flyout — which, to be fair, was anything but routine — is a tough look.

Tennessee not only missed an opportunity to win an important road series, but they ensured that rival fans will be chirping all week (or longer) on social media.

I love seeing players play with emotion as much as anyone, but you probably want to make sure there’s something to celebrate before letting the emotion fly.
