The Kansas City Chiefs have seemingly solved their backup quarterback situation, giving head coach Andy Reid his latest reclamation project behind Patrick Mahomes. They had already signed QB Jake Haener to a reserve/future deal, but they’ve now got a true solution who has a lot of NFL starts under his belt.

As first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have finalized a trade with the New York Jets to acquire QB Justin Fields. A former first-round pick out of Ohio State in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, Fields hasn’t exactly had the prettiest start to his NFL career. He had a 10-28 record as a starter with the Bears before being shipped to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 and signing with the dysfunctional New York Jets in 2025. He’s thrown for 9,039 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions with a 61.4 completion percentage during his career, with 489 carries for 2,892 yards and 23 touchdowns.

“The Justin Fields’ experience with the New York Jets didn’t go as planned. After reviving his image with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fields hit the open market last March and signed a lucrative deal that paid him $40 million over two years. What is often forgotten in the Aaron Rodgers saga of 2025 is that Fields was the Steelers’ first choice at quarterback. They wanted him back, and New York outbid them.

In hindsight, taking slightly less and sticking with the Steelers probably would have been better for Fields. He struggled mightily in New York, going 2-7 as a starter and posting one of the worst QBRs of his career at just 38.7. When he had infrastructure that allowed him to succeed, however, Fields went 4-2 and had career highs in passing and completion percentages with the Steelers. He raised the floor of the offense with his legs, and his ball location and accuracy looked precise for the first time since Ohio State.

In an environment rich with QB development and with less pressure, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Fields turn it around once and for all.” – A to Z Sports’ Rob Gregson

The Chiefs will reportedly take on $3 million of Fields’ $10 million guaranteed salary for the 2026 NFL season, while New York will eat the rest of his cap hit. Kansas City will also send the Jets a 2027 sixth-round pick in trade, per Schefter.

What does the Justin Fields trade mean about Patrick Mahomes’ injury recovery timeline?

A big question that will come after this trade: Does it signal that Patrick Mahomes won’t be ready to start the 2026 NFL season?

I think that’s still very much in the cards for Kansas City and Mahomes for him to be ready for Week 1, but it’s good business to prepare for all possibilities. The reality is that Mahomes will likely miss the opportunity to lead the team during OTAs and the mandatory minicamp, and possibly even into training camp. That will give Justin Fields a chance to fully integrate into Andy Reid’s offensive scheme with QB1 snaps. He’ll already have an advantage in that regard and some familiarity after playing for Matt Nagy in Chicago.

It’s a massive opportunity for the 27-year-old Fields to learn from one of the best QB minds in the game, and it could be a true shot at a career-revival arc for Fields. Even if he doesn’t get on the field in Week 1, there’s a real opportunity in Kansas City for him to have a positive impact in a single season with the Chiefs. He’s coming off a two-year stretch in which he showed true progress as a passer, playing 19 games, starting 15, completing 64% of his passes, throwing for 2,365 yards, 12 passing touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

It’s hard not to think of the Alex Smith trade, where he came over to Kansas City under similar pretenses in terms of his career arc and success in the NFL. Fields is a much better athlete and runner, which Coach Reid and Eric Bieniemy will be sure to get the most out of.
