This would be a rough spot for the Vikings to be in.

Every year, there are players for whom some will pound the table and others who you believe should be avoided at all costs. The last NFL mock draft from ESPN’s Field Yates has just that. The first pick in his two-round mock draft is exactly that by having the Vikings select safety Dillon Thieneman.

“As Minnesota awaits word on whether safety Harrison Smith will return in 2026, coordinator Brian Flores’ defense is in need of a player who can offer similar ability to limit explosive plays downfield and cover well in the slot. Thieneman had six interceptions as a true freshman at Purdue, displaying exceptional ball skills, range and overall play. He finished up his career with one season at Oregon and had a dominant combine, which included a 4.35-second 40-yard dash.”

Dillon Thieneman continues to be sent to the Vikings

It’s been a constant for the Vikings to be sent Thieneman. Through the first 315 mock drafts, the Vikings have been given Thieneman 72 times, which is tied for first overall. It’s become a very popular choice ever since Daniel Jeremiah sent him to the Vikings in a February 24th mock draft. It’s not a surprise either, as once one of the top mock drafters ends up making a bold move like that usually gets copied.

I’ve written before that Thieneman doesn’t make sense for the Vikings, and it’s mainly due to the athleticism not matching the tape.

“I’m on somewhat of an island here, as I have a third-round grade on Thieneman. He’s a good player who will end up being a good player for a defense, but that doesn’t scream first-round talent. Thieneman has been a very popular player to be sent to the Vikings in recent weeks as well.

For me, his testing didn’t turn up on tape, and he struggled to play as a deep safety. Where he thrived was in the box. The Vikings already have a really good player in the box in Josh Metellus, and having someone who is both versatile and excels as a free safety should be what the Vikings look for. I wish I had seen his athleticism pop on film, but it just didn’t for me.”

Yates also sent an explosive pass rusher in Dani Denis-Sutton to the Vikings, which is fine in a vacuum. He’s not a great scheme fit, but defensive coordinator Brian Flores can find a way to utilize a player like that.

Taking Thieneman isn’t the smartest move for the Vikings, and it needs to end sooner rather than later.
