It was a bad day in Chicago for Tennessee basketball on Sunday. In search of the program’s first-ever Final Four appearance, the Vols had to get by the 1 seed Michigan Wolverines to pull it off.

Suffice to say, they did not. The Vols battled early and took a 16-14 lead, but a 21-0 Michigan run completely buried Tennessee, and Michigan went on and ran away with the game in a 95-62 blowout.

After the game, the Wolverine players spoke with CBS reporter Evan Washburn. Michigan’s Morez Johnson finished up the interview with a dig at Tennessee’s mantra coming into the game: “let’s go get ’em”.

Michigan’s Morez Johnson repeats Tennessee’s tournament mantra during postgame interview

“Morez, you got thoughts?” Washburn asked. “Let’s go get ’em!” Johnson yelled to the cheers of his teammates.

Well, that’s sports. The phrase “to the victors go the spoils” is a real thing, and there’s no doubt that Michigan proved to be the far better team on Sunday afternoon.

Tennessee had used the phrase “let’s go get ’em” in the postgame interview after each win during the tournament thus far. It’s in reference to the song of the same name by rapper BossMan Dlow, who put out the song shortly before the tournament began. It became an anthem and a motto for the team as they went on their run to the program’s third straight Elite Eight. The players would dance to the song in the locker room after each of their three tourney wins.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, as you never know when you’re going to get back there again. With Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Felix Okpara out of eligibility and Nate Ament’s future uncertain, Rick Barnes will have his work cut out for him again to get Tennessee back to having another look at a Final Four next season.

For now, it’s a bitter end to a hopeful run for Tennessee basketball.
