Latest NFL news could quietly have a huge impact on Aaron Rodgers’ looming decision with the Pittsburgh Steelers
The NFL looks to be headed back down a path that Aaron Rodgers knows all too well.
The NFL is having its annual league meetings this week in Phoenix, Arizona. Every year, the league gathers all of its owners, coaches, and general managers to get together for a few days and make decisions about the present and the future of the league.
The focal point of this year’s meetings relates to the NFL and the expiring CBA between the league and the referees’ association. In fact, talks are in such a bad place that the NFL is already preparing to have replacement referees in place. Well, if you remember back to the last time that happened, Aaron Rodgers was at the center of that controversy, and you have to wonder how it will affect his looming decision.
NFL and the NFLRA in a bad spot with negotiations
“The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement with the NFLRA expires May 31. The league sent a memo to each club last week prohibiting public comment on the situation. But as owners, league officials and team staffers in Phoenix at their annual meeting, sources painted a dire portrait of the likelihood of an agreement before replacement officials are hired.” – Adam Schefter, ESPN
How the referee’s disagreement could affect Aaron Rodgers’ decision
If you think back to the last time the NFL had replacement refs in place, the catalyst that ended the strike of the traditional refs and got everyone on the same page was the infamous Monday Night Football game where Rodgers threw what is now called the “fail mary.”
Thinking he and the Green Bay Packers had won the game against the Seattle Seahawks, one ref ruled the catch a touchdown, the other ref ruled it incomplete, and the game ended with a 14-12 Seahawks win.
If you think that a game almost 15 years ago doesn’t stick in Rodgers’ craw, you haven’t seen him interview very much.
A very fickel and unique human, I could easily see the NFL not having referees in place being a deciding factor in what Rodgers does with his career decision. Maybe it fuels him to come back and get the best of the replacement refs, or maybe he calls it a career.
Only time will tell.
