Flashback to Week 16 of the 2025 season. The Pittsburgh Steelers are underdogs on the road against the Detroit Lions, in a game that has massive playoff implications for both teams.

Well, the Steelers ultimately won the game 29-24, but it didn’t come without one of the biggest controversies of the season, when star WR DK Metcalf got into an altercation with a fan that resulted in his suspension for the rest of the regular season, and a voiding of the guarantees in his contract. Yet, if you remember correctly, Metcalf finished the game in Detroit. Well, the NFL just made sure that won’t happen again.

NFL passes “DK Metcalf rule” to allow for outside help on disqualifications

“NFL owners have approved a rule change allowing the league to step in and assist on potential disqualifications, whether for flagrant football acts or non-football acts, and initiate a flag if one wasn’t thrown. Situations like DK Metcalf’s incident last year, where no flag meant no ejection, can now be addressed in real time.” – Adam Schefter, ESPN

The only reason that Metcalf was suspended, is that sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson and the CBS cameras caught him live and in 4k. The officials obviously have their eyes on the field of play, while Metcalf was off messing with a fan in the stands, which is a problem in its own right.

How DK Metcalf just changed the league forever

This is no small move by the league. It essentially means that no matter where you are on the football field, you’re being watched like a Hawk. Think of the fights between players that maybe the officials miss, or situations on the sideline between coaches and players, even, and especially, anything involving players and fans.

Not sure it’s the kind of rule you want to have named after you, but DK Metcalf will live in infamy forever.
