Steelers’ latest quarterback visit aligns with what Mike McCarthy just said he’s looking for in a rookie signal-caller
Mike McCarthy has a clear type at quarterback, and one Steelers pre-draft visit fits that mold.
The Pittsburgh Steelers brass is currently between meetings and cocktails at the annual league meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, but come next week, the entire scouting and coaching staff will gather inside the UPMC Sports Complex on the Southside for April draft meetings.
One of the more widely discussed positions when it comes to the Steelers is, of course, quarterback. It feels like a foregone conclusion that Aaron Rodgers will return to Pittsburgh, given that Coach McCarthy said the two of them have been in constant contact. But McCarthy didn’t shy away from adding a rookie quarterback, and one of the Steelers’ reported visits fits his mold.
Mike McCarthy is looking to add a quarterback in 2026 NFL Draft
“I’m hopeful there will be a quarterback, you know, at the right time there for us to possibly add to our roster,” McCarthy said when asked about draft strategy at the annual league meetings in Phoenix.
McCarthy would go on to say that he wishes he could develop five quarterbacks at once, so he is certainly a coach who views quarterbacks as pawns on his chessboard, but what he said is still notable when you consider one of the Steelers’ latest visits.
Steelers host Miami QB Carson Beck on visit
I’ll be honest with you, Beck fits the mold of what McCarthy has worked with in the past at over 6-5, and over 230 pounds with 10-inch hands and a live Arm, but I would shy away from him as a prospect.
For one, the juice on his football simply wasn’t the same last year. He suffered an elbow injury during the 2024 season with the Georgia Bulldogs, which resulted in a total repair of his UCL ligament, a common injury among baseball pitchers.
He transferred to the University of Miami, where he helped lead the Hurricanes to a national championship game in 2025, but he tossed the game-ending interception and has never shown the ability to carry a team.
He has a ton of experience and played in big-time programs, but I view him as a day-three quarterback whose best bet is being a long-term backup in the league.
