The Washington Commanders have been one of the most active teams this offseason as the top spenders so far.

We saw the Commanders bring in new talent, but they also started the offseason with a surprising release of starting center Tyler Biadasz. Reports say they swung big at Tyler Linderbaum, who shattered the center market, but they didn’t land him, nor any other centers, in free agency.

Head coach Dan Quinn gave us some insight at the center position during the NFL Annual League Meeting, and also left the door open on another addition.

Dan Quinn talks about the center position

All 32 teams were in Arizona for the NFL Annual League Meeting, and we got to hear from Quinn on the hottest topics surrounding the Commanders. Quinn and Adam Peters didn’t want to talk much about releasing Biadasz, but Quinn did give insight into where the position stands.

He went on to say that Nick Allegretti, who just got a contract extension, and Julian Good-Jones are competing for the starting spot right now, but the door is open for other additions, as they should be.

There’s no way the Commanders can roll into a critical 2026 season with Allegretti as the starting center when he only played 100 snaps at the position in the last two games. The Commanders need to add competition at the position, and I’m looking at the 2026 NFL Draft class.

The Commanders need to draft a center to compete as the starter

There aren’t many centers out there in free agency right now, although teams will make roster cuts and someone could become available. In the meantime, the 2026 NFL Draft has a lot of options that fit what they’re looking for. They could take someone like Sam Hecht or Jake Slaughter at No. 71 overall, and they’d be sure starters if they’re taken that high.

Don’t be surprised if they take a center with one of their four day-three picks, and that player competes right away as well. I’m high on Pat Coogan, Jager Burton, and Matt Gulbin as options in the fifth or sixth round. Any of these could also compete at left guard with Chris Paul, who thrives in pass protection but is a liability in the run game.

The Commanders have to get this position right after releasing Biadasz, and QB Jayden Daniels will go under center more than ever before in his career in David Blough’s offensive scheme.
