Potential Chargers first-round pick may have accidentally ruined his chance of getting drafted by Jim Harbaugh
The Chargers may follow a trend and pass on him during this year’s NFL Draft.
Jim Harbaugh is helping lead the charge for another Los Angeles Chargers NFL Draft experience. A recent update from a highly-touted prospect in this year’s class may ring alarm bells for fans of the team, though.
Clemson DT Peter Woods comments on recent visit with Jim Harbaugh
On the Up & Adams show with Kay Adams, Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods revealed that his meeting with Harbaugh was one of the best so far.
While that is not particularly surprising (who couldn’t enjoy a convo with Harbaugh?), it is worth noting simply because of how the Chargers have operated recently when it comes to the connection between Top-30 visits and their picks.
They generally don’t correlate, so Woods may not be high on their radar as of now.
The Clemson defender usually goes somewhere between the middle of round one and the middle of round two during recent mock draft scenarios. The Chargers do have multiple needs along their DL, so the interest would also make sense if it’s legitimate.
I talked to AJ Schulte about Woods’ comments here, and they may be more notable than people would think on the surface during this time of the year. With the first night just over a week away, it will be intriguing to see if LA retains interest in him early in the draft.
“The Chargers are usually a team that plays their cards pretty close to their vest when it comes to the top of their draft. Their visits with players pre-draft are typically only done for some sort of information-gathering, whether it be personal or medical, and rarely indicates their interest. Last year, the Chargers didn’t draft any of their Top-30 visits. The year prior, neither Joe Alt or Ladd McConkey were top-30 visits, and the team didn’t speak to the pair after the Combine. The only 30 visit they’ve drafted recently was Michigan linebacker Junior Colson, and his visit was most likely medically-related.
Woods talking about this publicly doesn’t necessarily remove him from their board, but it’s definitely eyebrow-raising, given the Chargers’ usual MO with these visits. They have been frequently linked to Woods’s teammate, edge rusher T.J. Parker, so perhaps this could be a bit of a smokescreen to gather more on Parker, rather than Woods.” — AJ Schulte, A to Z Sports
The Bolts picked Woods in Ryan Roberts’ latest mock draft, too. The value and need are clearly there for him to be in contention for the pick.
“22. Los Angeles Chargers: Peter Woods, DT, Clemson
The Chargers need to find a difference maker on the interior of their defense. Woods is a wildcard player, but there is no question that he has great upside as a penetration-style player.”
Now, we just wait to see if the Chargers break a trend and take Woods following their meeting together and his reveal that it went well.
