Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for Super Bowl LXI officially gets underway with Phase One of the offseason workout program on Monday
The Kansas City Chiefs get back to work on Monday. The quest for Super Bowl LXI kicks off with Phase I of the offseason workout program, a key ramp-up period ahead of OTAs and mandatory minicamp.
The Kansas City Chiefs will take one step closer toward the 2026 NFL season and their quest for another Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LXI on Monday.
The Chiefs officially kick off their voluntary offseason workout program on Monday, April 20. Teams with new head coaches each got a head start on the offseason program. Most other NFL teams, except the Denver Broncos, will begin their offseason workout programs this week.
Chiefs begin Phase I of the offseason workout program on Monday
Monday marks the start of two weeks of voluntary Phase I offseason workouts for Kansas City Chiefs players. This part of the program doesn’t involve football activities. Instead, it is intended as a ramp-up period for players to acclimate before the fun begins in Phase II. Players can attend team meetings, partake in strength and conditioning training at team facilities, and participate in physical rehabilitation only. Remember, this is not required, and players can attend as they please.
The Chiefs have typically held this phase of offseason work virtually. Patrick Mahomes, for instance, typically hosts offensive skill players for some offseason training down in Texas. With Mahomes rehabbing from his knee injury, that won’t have the same cadence this year.
On Monday, May 4, the Chiefs will advance to Phase II of the offseason workout program. That portion includes on-field workouts with individual or group instruction and drills, but still no live contact or 11-on-11, 7-on-7, or 9-on-7 team drills. Think position-specific work and high knees.
The Chiefs will enter Phase III of the offseason workout program with six total voluntary Organized Team Activities sessions (May 26-28 and June 1-3). OTAs include on-field workouts with individual and group components, including walkthroughs, but no live contact is permitted during these workouts. Kansas City typically has 10 OTA practices, but this year’s schedule has been adjusted to six.
Every player on the 90-man offseason roster must attend the team’s mandatory minicamp session from June 9 through June 11. Training camp dates won’t be announced until later this Summer. But the event typically begins sometime in late July. Rookies and veterans reported to camp on July 21 last year.
NFL Offseason Workout Phases Defined
- Phase 1: “Consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.”
- Phase 2: “Consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual or group instruction and drills, as well as ‘perfect play drills,’ and drills and plays with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, conducted at a walk-through pace. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.”
- Phase 3: “Consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or ‘OTAs’. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.”
