The Los Angeles Rams delivered the stun of the draft, selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 13 overall. As more and more details come out, the process surrounding the pick continues to look even worse.

One example is how San Francisco 49ers’ general manager John Lynch held back laughter when asked about the pick in his draft night press conference.

Many experts immediately became puzzled by the selection. Ty Simpson wasn’t worth a first-round pick by consensus, and especially for the Rams, it made little sense. Well, almost every expert.

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky has been banging the drums for Ty Simpson to be selected in the first round for a while. He sees himself in the former undersized backup caliber quarterback, so that’s not a surprise.

The biggest loss on draft night was Dan Orlovsky’s win

While the rest of the football world immediately began to question the pick (at the mildest) and Rams fans wanted to burn SoFi stadium down, Orlovsky danced in jubilation that someone proved him right. He has adamantly defended the pick since it happened, even going so far as to say that it’s “the way high-end organizations operate.”

Look, Orlovsky certainly deserves his flowers and the credit of being right. However, the bottom line is this was not a good move by the Rams. Sure, the Rams are Super Bowl contenders, but they certainly in a spot where they can make a luxury pick at 13 overall.

And let’s be honest: that’s what this is. Les Snead clearly thinks this is the best move for the team and while that may be the case in the long run, the only way it helps, now, is if Stafford gets hurt and Simpson steps up and plays well in his stead.

And I think I can speak for all Rams fans when I say no one wants to be in that position to begin with.

So, again, Orlovsky was right and he deserves his fair share of praise for sticking to his guns. But that doesn’t change the fact the Rams made the wrong decision and the fact he’s trumpeting otherwise (mainly because he was right) only adds to the disappointment.
