Colts landed a player with a skill you can’t teach who the NFL forgot to draft, and he has a good shot to make the 53-man roster

Colts signed a UDFA who has great speed for a LB, which will help him try to make the 53-man roster. Many thought he would hear his name called in the 2026 NFL Draft, and now he gets the chance to prove them all wrong.

The Indianapolis Colts landed multiple talented players in the 2026 NFL Draft. They still had to get to work signing undrafted free agents post-draft.

The Colts leaned towards the defensive side of the ball this year. With five of their eight picks coming on that side of the ball. In fact, two of their three total offensive selections didn’t even come till the seventh round.

That didn’t stop them from targeting difference makers on that side of the ball on defense on the undrafted free agency market. With them landing a player at a position of need that most expected to hear his name called in the draft. And he has a skill that is sure to translate to the pro level and increase his chances of making the 53-man roster.

Colts sign LSU linebacker West Weeks

One of the Colts’ most notable undrafted free-agent signings is LSU linebacker West Weeks. Week’s proven ability as a run stopper and his 4.56 40-yard dash speed led many to project him to be drafted. That dream didn’t come to fruition, though, and now he joins the Colts with a giant chip on his shoulder.

Weeks joins his college teammate in 2025, safety AJ Haulcy, who the Colts selected in the third round of the draft. Weeks was a key member of the LSU Tigers’ defense. 2025 was his first season as a starter, during which he started all 11 games he played. And he went on to lead the team in tackles for loss with eight.

LSU LB West Week’s 2025 college stats

  • 74 total tackles (3rd most on LSU)
  • 1 pass deflection
  • 8 tackles for loss (Led LSU)
  • 2.5 sacks

Weeks picked a good spot to sign as a UDFA if you ask me. The Colts might have used two draft picks on linebackers (CJ Allen and Bryce Boettcher), but the room as a whole still needs depth.

Entering training camp, the Colts are expected to keep roughly six linebackers on the 53-man roster. And it seems safe to assume only three spots are locks with Allen, Boettcher, and Akeem Davis-Gaither. The next most likely would be Jaylon Carlies, but calling him a lock would seem like a stretch.

That leaves two to three spots for Weeks to fight for. He is already solid in the run game, and while inexperienced, he’s had some decent flashes in coverage. His recovery speed helps him a lot in that regard, and I could see him being better as a coverage linebacker in the NFL than he was at LSU. Weeks is a solid addition to the Colts’ rookie class and will be a fun one to watch compete in training camp.
