Patriots scandal involving Mike Vrabel could play right into the Steelers’ hands following latest report on Mike Tomlin

If the New England Patriots end up moving on from their current head coach, it could play directly into the Pittsburgh Steelers’ hands.

For the first time since he left the Pittsburgh Steelers following their playoff loss to the Houston Texans, Mike Tomlin made a national statement during his debut for NBC Sports this week.

He touched on his time in Pittsburgh, why he moved on, what he thinks of Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers, and what he looks forward to in broadcasting. But you could tell there was almost an itch that needed to be scratched when he talked about the process. Well, if things in New England continue to get wonky, there is a chance that said situation arises, and the Steelers would benefit.

Mike Tomlin named a person to watch for Patriots HC job, should Mike Vrabel resign

If you have somehow missed the scandal that is going on in New England, let me bring you up to speed. Patriots HC Mike Vrabel and former (emphasis on former) insider for The Athletic, Dianna Russini, were caught at a resort together in Sedona, Arizona, raising questions about the nature of their relationship.

Russini has gone as far as to resign, while Vrabel missed part of the NFL Draft to seek counseling. There has been no indication that the Patriots will move on from Vrabel, nor has he suggested anything of the sort, but a new report raises some questions.

“The Krafts are extremely loyal and have no intention of firing Mike, nor do they want to see him quit over all this drama,” a Patriots insider told the Daily Mail. “But if these upcoming few months go haywire, and if they are put in a situation of no return, either with the team not doing well or the drama of Mike’s family issues taking over and forcing a decision on Mike’s coaching future, the one person that they would seek to replace him would be Mike Tomlin.”

How Mike Tomlin’s move to the Patriots would help the Steelers

If by some slim chance Tomlin did want to join New England before the season started, the Patriots would have to send draft capital to Pittsburgh. Mike Tomlin retired with years left on his deal, and until that time passes, the Steelers retain his coaching rights. So it will take a lot of work to even get that far, but if this situation grows bleak, it could be to the benefit of the Steelers.
