‘I don’t think it drags out until May 27’ – Insider shares update on Tennessee and Juke Harris as another program tries to enter the mix
The Tennessee Volunteers’ pursuit of Wake Forest Demon Deacons transfer guard Juke Harris continued this week as Rick Barnes went to California to visit the coveted portal target.
The Tennessee Vols made it clear this week that they’re all-in on landing Wake Forest Demon Deacons transfer guard Juke Harris.
Vols head coach Rick Barnes and his staff visited Harris in California on Wednesday (which was first reported by VolQuest).
The trip to the west coast came a day after Barnes told fans at a Big Orange Caravan stop in Chattanooga that Tennessee isn’t done yet in the portal.
Harris, 6-foot-7 from Salisbury, NC, averaged 21 points per game at Wake Forest last season. He’s a player who’s viewed as the “missing piece” for the Volunteers.
The Wake Forest transfer is deciding whether to stay in the NBA Draft or return to college. Harris has until May 27 to withdraw from the NBA Draft and maintain his eligibility.
Vols insider shares end-of-week update on Juke Harris
VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Friday for his weekly appearance and shared the latest on Tennessee’s pursuit of Harris.
Hubbs noted that the timeline for a decision from Harris is unclear at this point, but the longtime Vols insider doesn’t think the decision will drag out until May 27.
“I don’t think we know a timeline,” said Hubbs. “Obviously he is an early entry into the NBA Draft and is evaluating his draft stock, and then he’ll make a decision after that. Now, every mock draft you see has him somewhere in the second round. Financially, it would make a lot more sense to play another year of college basketball and help your stock there, which is why most people don’t think the NBA Draft is a realistic option for him.
“Now, does he want to go through the pre-draft combine in Chicago and get full feedback from that so that he knows what he needs to work on this offseason? Sure, I think that could be a possibility. I don’t think it drags out until May 27, which is the final day you have to pull your name out of the draft if you want to. But I don’t know that there’s an immediate timeline for anything to happen, but I do think Tennessee has positioned themselves well with Juke Harris. And it feels like it’s more, I guess, maybe a matter of time than anything.”
“But now Louisville’s trying to make a run here late,” continued Hubbs. “I think some other schools have tried to reach out late, but he’s been in consistent conversation with Rick Barnes. And it’s the previous relationship that has helped Tennessee, because they did recruit him out of high school and the family and Juke like Tennessee and Rick Barnes, and the way that that they recruited him coming out of the high school ranks. So I think Tennessee has done as well as they can do with him. In terms of when something might come down, in terms of news, we’ll have to see. I don’t think we have a timeline right now on that deal.”
It’s no surprise that Louisville and other programs are trying to get into the mix for Harris, but this feels like it’s going to be the NBA or Tennessee for the Wake Forest transfer.
Transfer decisions can change at a moment’s notice. But as of now, Vols fans should feel good about Tennessee’s chances of landing Juke Harris.
