At least one national pundit is buying the Miami Dolphins’ most controversial 2026 NFL Draft pick to have a very productive rookie season
At least one national pundit is buying on Miami Dolphins rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas having a productive season in 2026.
The end result of the Miami Dolphins’ passing game overhaul this offseason is going to be a fascinating watch. The departures of wide receivers Tyreek Hill & Jaylen Waddle, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and several others leaves Miami with a blank canvas. Accordingly, the team drafted five pass catchers in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The pick that has many pundits and fans most skeptical is the first one: former Texas Tech wide receiver Caleb Douglas. The 6-foot-4 receiver will have a chance to establish his own identity in Miami beyond what the draft predictions stated; but there’s at least one person in his corner buying his ability to make a major impact in 2026.
NFL Network’s Cynthia Frelund ranks Miami Dolphins rookie Caleb Douglas in top-3 most productive rookie WR model
“I read this very much about opportunity…who else is there? Who is (Douglas) competing with? Therefore, an increase in target share. Now he also has (rookie wide receiver) Chris Bell, maybe if he’s not injured, could be considered. I was going to put both of them because then at least I was going to be right on one account.”

Douglas was perceived by many to be an ambitious selection by the Miami Dolphins brass, although general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has not shied away from his backing of the pick. There has been enthusiasm about the selection every time he’s been asked. And, perhaps most telling, Sullivan has repeatedly said he believes Douglas’ best football is ahead of him.
That will largely fall on the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff to develop and refine his abilities. The physical profile? It’s there. And as Frelund points out, the blank canvas in Miami leaves the door open for the third-round rookie. Suppose he hits it off with quarterback Malik Willis. That could be the ticket for plenty of shots down the field in 2026.
There’s no shortage of options for players to rise to the occasion in Miami. That is, of course, by design. Frelund is buying Douglas to be one who steps up.
