The Miami Dolphins‘ selection of Kadyn Proctor is one that will serve as a temperature setting move for this team in 2026. It’s the first draft choice of the Jon-Eric Sullivan regime and his style of play is something that the franchise hopes will prosper early. If it does, it has a chance to seep into the rest of the team and help re-shape the reputation of the Dolphins.

The big question since his drafting hasn’t been if Proctor will play. But where he will play. On ‘The Joe Rose Show’ Wednesday morning, Sullivan made a guest appearance and offered a starting point.

Miami Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan suggests Kadyn Proctor will start out at left guard, Jonah Savaiinaea will kick to right guard

“(Proctor) will do a little bit of both (guard and tackle), just because we always like to cross-train. But I think probably Day 1, I think (Proctor’s) probably lining up at left guard. And we’re gonna kind of fortify, and we’re gonna move Jonah to the right side and off we go. But it is moving pieces all the time and we really just want to play with a couple different things to get the best five out there. But I think if you pressed me on it? That’s probably what it looks like Day 1, and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Let’s be clear, these guys have to go out and perform. Sullivan did make sure to point that out as well — this is going to be fluid. At least to start. But the starting point of Proctor staying on the life side and working at guard short-term is great news. He gets to take reps between Miami’s two best players on the line.

The move is also good news for second-year guard Jonah Savaiinaea. The 2025 rookie manned the left guard spot in 2025 despite never playing left guard in college. Savaiinaea played left tackle, right guard, and right tackle at Arizona. Never left guard. And it, frankly, showed in 2025. Savaiinaea struggled mightily at times and wasn’t shy about the challenges of the switch during training camp.

It’s a slow progress…You know, watching TV you think it’s just going from right to left. But when you actually get into that left stagger and you haven’t been in that stagger in your whole life, it’s a big difference. Especially for myself just being able to, like I said, pushing off of my right leg. It’s something I worked on this offseason. Just personal stuff, just being able to get my hip mobility better,” said Savaiinaea during the first week of training camp.

That muscle memory should awaken quickly on the right side. And it sounds like the Miami Dolphins intend to give him the opportunity to win the right guard spot. Which makes the Proctor to left guard news good news for both the rookie himself and his new line-mate.
