Browns may have to weigh adding an unexpected quarterback who could soon become available in one of the crazier developments you’ll see
The Cleveland Browns just took a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, but they may not be done adding at the position. Andrew Berry could soon have a big decision to weigh.
The Cleveland Browns are set to maneuver through the rest of the offseason and training camp with four quarterbacks on the roster. After adding Taylen Green in the fifth round of the recent 2026 NFL Draft, the Browns have their QB room for the upcoming season. Or do they?
Deshaun Watson is in Cleveland for at least one more year before the Browns can part ways. Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are the players entering their second seasons, and now Green is in the picture. However, the Browns may not be done and they could soon have to weigh shaking up the quarterback room.
Brendan Sorsby could become an option for the Browns
If Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby had decided to enter the draft after last season at Cincinnati, he would have been the third quarterback selected, and a potential first- to second-round pick. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech for a big payday, but it appears he may never play another down in college.
Sorsby recently took a leave from the Texas Tech program to enter rehabilitation for alleged gambling issues. With reports out there that Sorsby gambled on his own games earlier in his career, it’d be a surprise to see him play again. And with that, we’re looking at a possible supplemental draft happening this summer. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero had more on it.
“If Brendan Sorsby goes into the supplemental draft, which would require for the NCAA to rule prior to the end of June, prior to the supplemental draft. And for him to decide to not follow through on legal options. If he goes into the supplemental draft, we are probably going to have the highest drafted supplemental draft player in decades,” Pelissero stated on the Rich Eisen Show.
“Teams are going to be balancing out everything you just said: integrity of the game, the concern over gambling issues, and a player who is potentially a franchise quarterback in the NFL.”
Could the Browns actually take a swing at adding Brendan Sorsby?
Teams blindly bid a draft pick from the following year’s draft in the supplemental draft. The Arizona Cardinals were the last team to take a player in 2019 when they spent a fifth-round pick on S Jalen Thompson. Teams, incoming the Browns, would have to weigh whether or not Sorsby is worth a swing with what we currently know. Then, it’s all about how much teams would be comfortable giving up.
If the Browns want to bring in Sorsby, they’d have four players competing for two spots alongside Watson on the 53-man roster. For a team that hasn’t been able to find a franchise quarterback, it’s absolutely worth a late swing in the supplemental draft. In the end, the Browns would have to trade or cut two of Sorsby, Sanders, Gabriel, and Green. Gabriel is an easy one to push out with how things currently stand, so it could come down to the other three for one spot.
Sorsby is unbelievably talented with dual-threat ability at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds. At Cincinnati the last two seasons, Sorsby threw 45 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions in total with 5,613 passing yards. Sorsby added 1,027 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground over those two seasons.
The talent is there and the Browns are in a position to turn down upgrades to their quarterback room. If Sorsby does indeed enter the supplemental draft, the Browns have a decision to make.
