The Miami Dolphins‘ wide receiver room has endured plenty of questions since the team bid farewell to Tyreek Hill and traded away Jaylen Waddle. Many hoped to see Miami land a free agent addition to bolster the proven element of the room.

One such free agent Miami has been tied to? He’s now off the market. And based on the reported terms of the deal, it’s probably a good thing Miami didn’t have the money to spend. Veteran wide receiver Jauan Jennings has signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson has reported this offseason that the Dolphins had interest in wide receiver Jauan Jennings. The formerly San Francisco 49ers wide receiver posted 9 receiving touchdowns last season. Jennings has been a productive role player for the 49ers for years. He offers the adjusted size that Miami seems to be coveting on the perimeter and is a strong blocker, too.

But his new, one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings is reported to be worth up to $13 million.

Miami wasn’t paying that. And Jackson himself confirmed as much, posting last night that Miami “couldn’t compete financially“. To that sense, I say ‘good’. Jennings is undoubtedly a good player. But he’s 29 years old this summer. And spending anywhere close to that dollar amount of Jennings would have felt counterproductive to the big-picture objectives Miami has laid out this offseason.

If the goal is to be fiscally responsible to return the team to a better cap situation? And also to get younger? Jennings was always going to be at odds with those goals. Miami did not hold back in the 2026 NFL Draft, pulling in three wide receiver selections. They, along with veterans like Malik Washington, Jalen Tobert, and Tutu Atwell, should be the ones to play this season out. If a reasonably priced veteran free agent is staring them in the face in the next few months, the conversation can be had.

But incentives up to $13 million is anything but that. Which means it’s a good thing that Miami wasn’t the team to commit.
