NFL insider tabs the Miami Dolphins as a potential landing spot for maligned college quarterback facing a possible late jump to the league
The Miami Dolphins did not draft a quarterback in 2026. But one NFL insider tabs them as a fit for drafting one this…summer?
There’s a developing situation in college football. It should have the attention of every team in the NFL, including the Miami Dolphins.
One of college football’s most physically gifted quarterbacks? He may be pushed out of playing in 2026 and be forced to make a leap to the pros this summer. The fallout of Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby checking himself into a facility for gambling addition has yielded reports of thousands of placed bets and an investigation by the NCAA. There are lawsuits pending. It’s messy. For Sorsby, the most simple solution may be to move on. He could be to declare for the NFL Supplemental Draft by the end of June. If it happens, one NFL insider has the Miami Dolphins on his short-list of possible suitors.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer tabs the Miami Dolphins as a potential landing spot for QB Brendan Sorsby
“I’ve got four teams here that I think in the 2026 draft kept their powder dry. For 2027. The Jets, the Cardinals, the Browns, the Dolphins. I think all four of those teams kicked the can down the road at various levels. The Jets get Geno Smith, the Dolphins go get Malik Willis. They’ve all kind of patch-worked the position together and basically said we don’t think there’s somebody as there’s somebody worthy of taking that high in ’26. So, we are allowing ourselves the opportunity now to extend this out and get to ’27 and take one there.

And what happens if one of those teams says Brendan Sorsby is as good as any of the kids that’s coming that are coming out next year? right? We’ll throw a second round pick at it.”
Now, the Miami Dolphins’ messaging around their investment to Willis has been strong. But any investment opportunity at the right price would be good business. The circumstances of Sorby’s potential departure for the NFL would make for a difficult assessment of where the risk stops and the reward begins.
But it doesn’t take very long of watching Sorbsy to see that he’s a supremely gifted athlete and thrower of the football. Texas Tech could have (should have?) been a massive launch point for the signal caller — he transferred to the Red Raiders after breaking out this past season with Cincinnati.
One thing Miami has working against them as a possible fit is that the Dolphins do not currently have a surplus of 2027 capital in the early rounds. The New York Jets have three first round picks at their disposal, so they’re oozing with flexibility. Miami’s first round with multiple scheduled picks in 2027 is the fifth.
None of this matters if Sorsby doesn’t make the leap. But it is worth noting that Breer has the Dolphins on the short-list in the event that he does.
