The Miami Dolphins’ latest roster move is their ultimate lottery ticket
The Miami Dolphins’ latest move is a perfect embodiment of what the 2026 season is all about.
The Miami Dolphins have filled their unexpected roster spot with a familiar face.
Miami started this week signing a fullback to their roster, which claimed the final opening on their 91-man roster. The Dolphins, of course, have an extra spot available for their offseason roster thanks to TE Seydou Traore’s status as an international player. But Miami’s time with no roster openings proved to be short-lived. Undrafted rookie running back Le’Veon Moss retired after mini-camp.
The Dolphins have found someone else to take his spot on the roster. And it is perhaps the ultimate lottery ticket.
Miami Dolphins claim former Green Bay Packers DL James Ester off waivers
The Dolphins claimed former Green Bay Packers defensive tackle James Ester off waivers yesterday. Ester is a former undrafted rookie who landed with the Packers during Jeff Hafley’s era as the team’s defensive coordinator. He entered the league in 2024 out of Northern Illinois and posted an 8’11” standing broad jump at his Pro Day.
The intrigue for Ester, however, may not be just the fact that he was claimed to fill Miami’s final open spot.
Instead, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald offered a fascinating nugget in the immediate aftermath of this transaction being announced. Per Jackson, the Miami Dolphins are interested in “experimenting” with him on the offensive side of the football. Jackson reported that the Dolphins would like to see him get some reps at guard. Miami is going to have time this season to get creative and throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Converting a defensive tackle to offensive guard would, certainly, qualify. Many of the team’s more ambitious transactions may prove to not workout. But if even just a handful do, it’s added value to a season that is all about setting the foundation. Let’s see what Ester’s got…on either side of the ball.
