Drew Gilbert won’t stop doing the Giants’ banned celebration, but Tony Vitello says two pumps is OK

Former Tennessee Volunteers baseball coach Tony Vitello has had to turn into the fun police over the last week in his role as the manager of the San Francisco Giants, and it’s mostly because of Drew Gilbert.

Former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello wasn’t kidding when he told reporters in Knoxville last fall that he accepted the San Francisco Giants manager’s job so he could babysit former UT outfielder Drew Gilbert.

Vitello had to tell Gilbert and his teammates to stop doing their viral “thrusting” celebration after games.

The first year Giants manager said before a game against the Dodgers last week that the outfielders are a “close knit group” before telling reporters that “there was a meeting” about the celebration.

Unsurprisingly, Gilbert, who is perhaps San Francisco’s biggest source of natural energy, has refused to stop doing the celebration.

Gilbert was caught on camera thrusting in the outfield after the Giants’ win against the A’s on Sunday.

It turns out that Vitello is on board with the celebration as long as it’s just two thrusts.

“Well, if you’re a Key and Peele fan, you can do two hip thrusts,” said Vitello in an interview with Chris Rose. “You just can’t do three.”

Gilbert may have gone over the line on Sunday. As he was approaching his teammates, he hit a premature thrust before executing the two main thrusts. I’m not sure on Key and Peele’s two pump rule, but I don’t think you get a warmup pump. Vitello, though, may have his own set of thrusting rules.

Either way, as long as the Giants keep winning, it sounds like they’re going to keep thrusting away in the outfield.
