The San Francisco 49ers have one of the best problems in all of football.

The team is paying a starting quarterback handsomely — but they’ve also got another potential starter in the room. There aren’t enough good starters to go around for all 32 franchises these days, let alone multiples on the same team. And yet that’s where the 49ers find themselves with Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. It wasn’t all that long ago that Jones was perceived as a flop. 2025 changed all that. And now the 49ers have doubled down on their Mac Jones stocks from last season after plenty of speculation.

The San Francisco 49ers have, per Tom Pelissero, added an additional $300,000 roster bonus to Mac Jones’ 2026 compensation. Jones proved to serve a critical role for a rebound season for San Francisco last season — making him just the latest successful reclamation quarterback in the NFL.

The question, after that success, was whether or not the 49ers would cash out and trade Jones after inking him to a two-year deal last year. Early reports this spring? They suggested that the 49ers didn’t have much of an appetite to move Jones. But the quarterback market is always a supply and demand proposition. Given the new commitment in cash, Jones appears to be set in place in San Francisco as a pivotal backup to Brock Purdy. The roster bonus isn’t enough to make a trade impossible — but it certainly tips the 49ers’ hand on their intentions.

In total, the 49ers will have nearly $6 million in available compensation for Jones on the table this season. $2.25 million of it is based on incentives. Given Purdy’s durability questions through his first four seasons, holding on to Jones could prove to be a wise decision. Even if they end up not actually needing him to take snaps behind center.
