It’s a safe bet to assume that the Miami Dolphins will be eager to skim the waiver wire at the end of this summer. When teams cut from 90 players down to 53 apiece? You’ll see the biggest influx of new talent available since the NFL Draft.

For a team like Miami, those waiver claims from teams with more depth could be the ticket to some more contributors for the year ahead. Hopefully, like we saw from Greg Dulcich last year, into the future, too. But there’s a new wrinkle in the waiver process this summer that was just finalized. It’s good news for Miami.

In years past, the cutdown deadline for NFL teams after the end of the preseason was the Tuesday of the following week. That has changed this year, per reports, and the new deadline is by 6PM EST on Sunday, August 30th. The move will give teams a shorter window to finalize their cut decisions. But it will also give players claimed and added to new teams two additional days to acclimate to their new situations.

For a team like that Dolphins, that feels relevant. You could tell me that there’s a handful of positions where a claimed player matters. For this year’s Miami Dolphins team, that player could end up dressing on game day in Week 1 and play some kind of snaps.

We saw the sudden change for cornerback Rasul Douglas last year. No, he wasn’t a waiver add. But he signed late in August and was pressed into action early in Week 1 thanks to injury. Every day counts in regards to prepping to play when you change teams in short proximity to playing. This move won’t necessarily impact everyone’s Week 1 depth chart. But it very well could impact the Miami Dolphins.
