Pros for Ahmad Moten

  • Possesses an outstanding first step to win reps early in the run and pass game
  • Boasts really impressive closing speed when working in pursuit
  • Showcased some of his biggest flashes in the most important games last season
  • Moten showcased some pass rush nuance/overall growth as a pass rusher

Cons for Ahmad Moten

  • Moten possesses below average anchor in the run, and it shows up against double teams
  • He had just one year of proven production, which is concerning
  • There is limited power in his hands/lacks consistent punch timing
  • Moten has some scheme specificity, and that could limit him for some teams

Background

Moten was originally a member of the 2022 recruiting class for Miami coming out of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons. He was not viewed as a massive commitment at the time, finishing as a three-star player. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Moten finished as the No. 558 overall player, the No. 80 defensive lineman, and the No. 72 player from the state of Florida for the 2022 class. Miami won out over an offer list that included Oregon, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Iowa State, UNC, Maryland, Syracuse, and West Virginia, among others.

After barely playing his first two seasons with the Hurricanes, Moten has evolved into a major contributor during the last two seasons. His 2024 season was solid, but 2025 was fantastic. In 38 games during his Miami career, Moten has managed to collect 51 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. The bulk of that production came during this past season.

Player Evaluation

Moten was a solid player before 2025, but he developed into one of the top defensive tackles in college football this past season. He is an impressive athlete on the interior who has a dynamite first step to create chaos in the backfield. In 14 games this past season, Moten managed to collect 31 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. When Moten has good timing off the snap, he is nearly impossible for a center or guard stop in a 1-on-1 situation. His biggest strength comes in the passing game, where he has shown the ability to get after the quarterback. Moten has some huge flash plays in the run game playing in pursuit, possessing notable closing speed to finish plays behind the line of scrimmage.

With Moten profiling as an attack style three technique on the next level, he has the weaknesses that you might expect. Moten doesn’t have a great anchor in the running game, and he can really struggle against double teams. That will limit Moten in terms of role and alignment. He probably also wouldn’t offer much upside working in an odd man front alignment either, and there will be some teams that won’t have overly high grades on Moten. His one year of projection will also be nitpicked, for now, anyway.

While there is some role specificity with Moten, he has the chance to become a plus starter as a penetrating three technique on the NFL level. That provides a sound floor in that role. If Moten can put together multiple years of production, he has the chance to continue rising up boards.
