The New England Patriots signed a toolsy defensive lineman that the rest of the NFL forgot to draft in the 2026 NFL Draft
The New England Patriots may have just found an absolute steal following the 2026 NFL Draft. The addition could provide important depth to the defense.
The New England Patriots have been in the middle of controversy recently due to the drama surrounding head coach Mike Vrabel and national reporter Dianna Russini. In the middle of that chaos, the Patriots were busy trying to put together their best possible 2026 NFL Draft haul.
While there is a difference of opinion on just how good that 2026 class is, the Patriots found some value throughout. That includes after the draft when the team signed former Miami Hurricanes defensive tackle David Blay Jr., a pretty unique prospect with intriguing upside. Blay was a rotational player on a deep and talented Miami defensive line, but he also has some interesting talent to build on.
Christian Barmore, Milton Williams, and Cory Durden are the projected interior starters going into next season. Outside of them, New England does have some openings for players to fight for depth opportunities. Don’t be shocked if Blay makes this roster when the final cut day comes and goes.
David Blay Jr.’s scouting report
At around 6-2 and 292 pounds, Blay is a slightly undersized nose tackle, but he is extremely active. The former Louisiana Tech transfer plays with an outstanding motor from the interior, making a solid amount of plays working from pursuit. There are also some flash plays from Blay, occasionally one gapping into the backfield.
The biggest negative for Blay comes from that overall lack of size. He will struggle at times to hold the point of attack against double teams. The Patriots would be wise to utilize Blay from multiple alignments to not get him caught at the point of attack. There is a ton of value to be had here.
David Blay Jr.’s career background
After playing at Harry S. Truman in Levittown, Pennsylvania, Blay began his college career at D3 West Chester. He became a dominant player during his redshirt freshman season in 2022, collecting 39 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, five sacks, and three more quarterback hurries. Blay parlayed that into an opportunity in the transfer portal, ending up at Louisiana Tech during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
During his two years with Louisiana Tech, Blay slowly developed into an outstanding performer in his breakout year in 2024. In 12 games, he managed to collect 46 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks. That once again allowed Blay to take advantage of his opportunity and land with the Miami Hurricanes for his final season.
In a season that ended with a National Championship appearance, Blay became an important rotational player on the interior. With talented defensive tackles such as Ahmad Moten and Justin Scott earning a lot of snaps, Blay served as a physical presence who handled a lot of the first work. On a tremendous defensive line, Blay finished the year with 28 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and one pass breakup.
His impact goes well beyond the box score, especially this past season with the Hurricanes.
