Odell Beckham Jr. is not the only veteran receiver on Giants’ radar as team continues searching for depth options on offense

The New York Giants will workout Odell Beckham Jr., and he might very well end up returning to his first NFL team. However, Odell is certainly not the only veteran wide receiver whom the Giants will test early this week. The front office invited several veterans to a round of workouts.

Veterans on the list

According to Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport from ESPN, the list includes JuJu Smith-Schuster, Braxton Berrios, and Anthony Miller.

Besides Beckham, Smith-Schuster is the most accomplished receiver of the group. Moreover, the 29-year-old pass-catcher played under Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for the Kansas City Chiefs. Last year, he had 33 catches for 345 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs. His best season came in 2018 with 1,426 yards for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he hasn’t had a 1,000-yard season since — he had 933 yards in 2022.

Berrios brings value as a special teamer as well. He’s spent NFL time with the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and Houston Texans. In 2021, he was a First-Team All-Pro as a kick returner. Meanwhile, Miller is a former second-round pick who never established himself as a viable NFL starter. He hasn’t had a full-time role in the NFL since 2020.

Roster situation

The Giants hurried up the process to sign another wide receiver after losing Gunner Olszewski, who tore his Achilles in OTAs last week. Malik Nabers, the team’s top offensive weapon, is recovering from an ACL injury.

Outside of them, the WR room has third-round rookie Malachi Fields, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Isaiah Hodgins, Calvin Austin, Ryan Miller, Jalin Hyatt, Xavier Gipson, Beaux Collins, and Dalen Cambre.

With that group, the Giants should probably be more concerned with high-end talent than depth. But it seems like general manager Joe Schoen and head coach John Harbaugh are more interested in adding veteran competence while the young players develop.

At this point, the Giants haven’t shown interest in some of the top available free agents, like Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill (who’s also recovering from a knee injury), Deebo Samuel, and Keenan Allen. Over the next few days, we should have a better understanding of the team’s plan, and who they are adding to the roster after all.
