Myles Garrett Trade: Historical precedent reflects very well on Cleveland Browns’ return
Trading edge rusher Myles Garrett was a massive move, and it looks significantly better when compared to past moves.
The Los Angeles Rams are never ones to shy away from a massive trade, and they did so once again on Monday afternoon by acquiring edge rusher Myles Garrett. The former first overall pick of the Cleveland Browns is going to the Rams in a massive deal.
It’s a massive price to pay for general manager Les Snead, but one he’s always been willing to pay. The “F Them Picks” strategy has netted them multiple Super Bowl and NFC Championship Game appearances, along with one Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Myles Garrett lands massive return
When you look at the other trades for edge rushers, there are some interesting comparables to look at over the last 10 years.
| Year | Team | Assets Acquired | Assets Sent |
| 2026 | Minnesota Vikings | Jonathan Greenard and No. 244 | No. 98 and 2027 3rd |
| 2025 | Green Bay Packers | Micah Parsons | Kenny Clark, 2026 1st, 2027 1st |
| 2024 | Atlanta Falcons | Matt Judon | 2025 3rd |
| 2024 | New York Jets | Hasson Reddick | Conditional 2026 3rd |
| 2024 | New York Giants | Brian Burns, 2024 5th | 2024 2nd, 2025 5th, 2025 5th |
| 2023 | San Francisco 49ers | Chase Young | 2024 3rd |
| 2023 | Chicago Bears | Montez Sweat | 2024 2nd |
| 2022 | Miami Dolphins | Bradley Chubb, 2025 5th | RB Chase Edmonds, 2023 1st, 2024 4th |

| 2018 | Los Angeles Rams | Dante Fowler Jr. | 2019 3rd, 2020 5th201 |
| 2018 | Chicago Bears | Khalil Mack, 2020 2nd, 2020 7th | 2019 1st, 2019 6th, 2020 1st, 2020 3rd |
You can make the argument that Garrett landed the biggest return of anyone at edge rusher. The argument here is going to come from Khalil Mack and Micah Parsons. Both players ended up going for two first-round picks and change. Mack had to send back second and seventh round picks for the third and sixth-round picks. That lessens the value of the trade overall versus two first-round picks and a player.
Now, when you look at the player going back to the Browns in Jared Verse, it’s a big win for the Browns. The former 19th overall pick is going into year three and is a two-time Pro Bowl player, including winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2024. That is worth a first-round pick in value at minimum, as players of Verse’s caliber are rarely traded at this stage of his career.
Plus, second and third-round picks being added to that pool gives the Browns a lot to work with, while also not having to use their draft capital to replace Garrett. If they are in the right spot, they could pool together to be a late first-round pick.
The question here is simple: did Garrett fetch the biggest trade value for an edge rusher in the modern NFL? Based on past precedent, the answer is a resounding yes. Now, Parsons arguably should have fetched more than Garrett, but the reality is he didn’t, because Kenny Clark is on the downside of his career.
Overall, this is a win for both parties, as the Rams get one of the best defensive players in NFL history while not cratering their future draft capital, instead spreading it out over multiple drafts. For Andrew Berry, he gets about as good of a trade value as you could expect for the situation he was in.
