Trading for Myles Garrett continues major Los Angeles Rams trend that won them a Super Bowl
Striking a massive trade for Myles Garrett is exactly what Rams GM Les Snead would do, and it comes at a unique cost.
The NFL world exploded on Monday afternoon when news broke of the Los Angeles Rams trading for Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett.
We’ve seen the Rams strike a lot of blockbuster trades over the last decade. From Sammy Watkins to Jalen Ramsey, Matthew Stafford, and Trent McDuffie, general manager Les Snead has never been afraid to make a massive swing. Taking these swings has netted them two Super Bowl appearances and one Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Rams history with first-round picks is complicated
Over the last 11 years, the Rams have made multiple trades with their first-round picks. Snead has gone with the stars over depth method, and it’s been an up-and-down process to bring a Super Bowl to the team. They have one title with multiple appearances in both the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship Game.
Since they selected Jared Goff at first overall in 2016, the Rams have made just two first-round picks. Only one of them is still on the roster after the proposed trade of Jared Verse to the Browns: this year’s 13th overall pick, quarterback Ty Simpson.
They have made massive swings consistently, including bringing in now five former first-round picks with those trades. When you look up and down the Rams’ roster, they still have four first-round picks they didn’t draft
- EDGE Myles Garrett
- QB Matthew Stafford
- CB Trent McDuffie
- CB Emmanuel Forbes
Snead has such a strong belief in the coaching staff that they choose to trade draft picks for former first-round picks and trust them to develop players outside of the top 32. With how much of a game-wrecker Garrett is, there is a chance it could result in another Lombardi Trophy.
It also raises the question of whether or not taking Simpson at 13th overall with this Super Bowl window was the wise pick. Right now, it’s hard to argue that it was.
