Bears QB Caleb Williams is already leading the hype train for rookie TE Sam Roush and what he can bring to Chicago’s offense
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams shared his first impressions of third-round rookie tight end Sam Roush and what he could bring to the TE room alongside Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland.
It’s been quite the busy day for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who was officially announced as the cover athlete for Madden NFL 27 and later appeared on the hit football podcast New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce.
During his interview, Williams of course reacted to the Madden news but also shared his thoughts on the offseason and entering Year 2 under head coach Ben Johnson. Williams also took the time to praise one of Chicago’s new rookies when asked by Travis how the team’s tight end room is looking.

When Travis Kelce was introducing the question about the TE room, he said he Bears have two absolute dawgs at the position referring to Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet. Before he could even finish the question, Williams had to cut Travis off and correct him.
“I got a third one now,” Williams said. “You haven’t seen him. There’s more. There’s always more.”
Williams is, of course, referring to rookie Sam Roush, the team’s third-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. When OTAs kicked off last week, Williams finally got to see his new tight end on the field in action and came away impressed from the first look.
“He’s built like the other guys also,” Williams explained. “Tall, smooth, he’s a freak of nature. Run block, pass block, catch, all of that. Whatever we need. We got three of those now. We’re juiced, I’m juiced. It’s always an advantage when you can have one tight end, but when you have three that can do all, it’s a big advantage for us. I’m excited and over here on the Bears’ side of town we’re really excited.”
Many criticized the pick, arguing the Bears reached for the position since the team already had Loveland and Kmet under contract through 2026 and expect both to play significant roles in the offense. The decision to draft Roush stemmed from the idea of running more 12 and 13-personnel this upcoming season.
“I think we got something good going on over here,” Williams added. “I got three of them, like I said. I’m very lucky… Advantage-wise, we can drop back and put those guys in protection, we can also go 13-personnel and then shift out – they get in their big heavy personnel on defense with guys that don’t cover as well – and we pop out and shift out and got guys that can run and run well, and obviously catch well. That’s a big up for us, big advantage for us.”
Last season, we learned how dangerous both Loveland and Kmet could be on the field, especially in big moments. Now you’re adding a 6-5, 250 pound freak of a rookie to the room who can do a lot more than he’s given credit for. Yeah, it sounds really exciting.
“We got some guys and I think obviously having Ben (Johnson) at the helm, he’s going to cook up this year with having those guys,” Williams said.
