Eric Bieniemy and Chad O’Shea’s update on Xavier Worthy is exactly what Kansas City Chiefs fans are dying to hear
After recent updates from both offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea, it’s apparent that Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy is setting himself up for success in 2026.
The Kansas City Chiefs have officially wrapped up OTAs, which was an opportunity for coaches like offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea to work with many players for the first time.
Bienemy knows Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, and others, but he left before many others arrived. As much as players are adjusting to his coaching style, he’s also getting familiar with them. One of those players is third-year wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
What’s Bieniemy’s first impression of Worthy? He’s going about his business the right way as he works himself back from his labrum injury.
“Xavier (Worthy) is doing a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said. “He’s accepted the challenge, he’s working, he’s doing all the little things the right way, and he’s continuing to grow. He’ll make a mistake here and there, but I love the energy that he brings. I love his initial quickness. I just like the kid’s approach and his personality… and I’m very impressed with Xavier so far. We still got a long ways to go, but so far, so good.”

- 2025 stats: 42 receptions for 532 yards and one touchdown.
Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy is putting in all the work he needs to behind the scenes to be great in Year 3
Chad O’Shea brings two decades of NFL coaching experience to the table. He’s worked with Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Brandin Cooks, Odell Beckham Jr., Amari Cooper, and Jerry Jeudy. Everybody knows Xavier Worthy is fast, but Coach O’Shea didn’t realize he was THAT fast.
“I mean, when you talk about Xavier Worthy, I knew he was fast, but when you work with him on the field in drills, I mean, I try to throw it as quick as I can when he’s running,” O’Shea said. “So, he’s got a tremendous amount of speed. Obviously, that’s the skill set he brings with some other things.”
It’s more than simply speed with Worthy, as O’Shea said. What are some of those other things that stand out to the new receivers coach? It all starts with the things that the fans don’t get to see.
“Yeah, I think the first thing is what you don’t see, and that’s off the field,” O’Shea explained. “I mean, he is tremendous in the classroom; his preparation so far has been outstanding. He’s very coachable; he’s not an error repeater. So, we correct mistakes, and he moves on very quickly. That’s something that I don’t think you see when somebody’s watching the film or watching from the stands, is how good he is in his preparation; that’s number one.”
Chad O’Shea came away from OTAs impressed with something that the Chiefs need Worthy to be better at
Beyond speed and preparation, Coach O’Shea has come away impressed by Worthy’s ball skills. That’s even with Worthy still not at 100% following his offseason labrum surgery.
“Number two, I’ve been very excited, or impressed with his ball skills,” O’Shea explained. “He catches the ball very well at all three levels — short, intermediate, and obviously the deep passes, which you guys saw some of that today. We were able to connect on some of those. So, I mean, his preparation and who he is and what he brings to the table there is outstanding, like I said, and then probably his ball skills just jump out at me. I obviously know about the speed, but I was excited about how well he’s caught the football.”
In practice on Wednesday, June 3. Worthy caught multiple deep shots in 7-on-7 drills per team reporter Matt McMullen. The deep ball is something that Patrick Mahomes and Worthy have tried desperately to connect on over the last two years. If Bieniemy and O’Shea can help unlock that part of Worthy’s game, with the deep ball tracking and catching of the football, the sky’s the limit for his impact on this offense.
