Notre Dame football has been recruiting the quarterback position at an extremely high level under head coach Marcus Freeman. Being able to land Kenny Minchey, CJ Carr, Blake Hebert, Noah Grubbs, Teddy Jarrard, and Champ Monds in five consecutive classes is tremendous. The odds are that momentum continues in the 2028 recruiting class.

Freeman and Co. just added a new talented signal caller to the 2028 quarterback board this week. Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic star Trey Tagliaferri was offered by the Fighting Irish, which brings some heavy intrigue. Part of it is because Tagliaferri is very talented, and he also comes from a high school that is getting more attention from the Notre Dame staff recently.

The Irish staff received a commitment from 2027 pass rusher Jackson Vaughn a couple of weeks ago, a teammate of Tagliaferri. Notre Dame also landed former Ohio State wide receiver Quincy Porter this offseason via the transfer portal, who also started at Bergen Catholic, an outstanding high school program. Freeman and his staff have continued to prioritize the New Jersey Catholic League even more recently.

With Florida signal caller Neimann Lawrence seemingly trending to Texas, it is a smart move by Notre Dame to extend the 2028 quarterback board a bit. On top of Tagliaferri, Kingston Preyear, and Lukas Prock are the other top names to know right now. Preyear is the quarterback that the Irish staff is in the best spot with at the moment.

Trey Tagliaferri’s recruiting background

Tagliaferri is considered to be either a three or four-star player, depending on which of the major recruiting platforms you look at. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Tagliaferri is currently ranked as a four-star, the No. 203 overall player, the No. 14 quarterback, and the No. 9 player from the state of New Jersey for the 2028 recruiting class. Rivals rate him as the No. 110 overall player in the country.

There is a long list of impressive programs that are already pursuing Tagliaferri. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas A&M, Auburn, Iowa, Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Arkansas, Maryland, Mississippi State, UNC, Virginia, Boston College, Stanford, Wake Forest, Syracuse, and Rutgers, among others.

As a sophomore in 2025, Tagliaferri put together a tremendous season for Bergen Catholic. The 6-1, 190-pound passer threw for 2,215 yards and 29 touchdowns in 11 games. Tagliaferri also added another score on the ground, while only throwing three interceptions on the season.
