Ohio State football picked up a huge five-star recruiting win, and one comment made by the newest Buckeye is sticking out

Ohio State picked up a five-star commitment at the wide receiver position, an important win for Cortez Hankton and the Buckeyes. However, due to the timing there will be some worry with it.

The Ohio State Buckeyes getting early commitment from standout recruits is nothing new. It happened with Chris Henry Jr., and it happened with Jamier Brown in the 2026 class.

Ohio State has now picked up another major recruiting win in the future, and it’s the first big one for Buckeyes wide receiver coach Cortez Hankton in Columbus.

Cortez Hankton just got himself a five-star talent for the Buckeyes

Early commitments are always a bit of a worry, especially in today’s era of recruiting where a lot of dollars are being thrown around. Ohio State added a 2029 commitment from elite Bellflower (CA) WR Austin Miller on Monday night, a player who is going to be a five-star and could be the No. 1 WR in the class.

The 2029 cycle is still a couple of years away, but Miller’s commitment is on a similar timeline as Henry and Brown’s commitments to Ohio State as mentioned. The elite wide receiver recruit is an impressive 6-foot-5, 200 pounds. As a freshman in California, Miller had 609 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches, as well as 883 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.

Miller is an all-around athlete who is a stellar defensive back recruit as well. Ohio State got an elite football player who can line up all over the place, though he projects as a wideout, and that’s what the Buckeyes recruited him as.

Miller was on campus earlier in June and formally received his offer from the Buckeyes. It didn’t take long for him to decide he wanted to be a Buckeye.

Ohio State is going to keep pumping out wideouts without Brian Hartline

“What separated Ohio State from everybody else was that it matched up to everything I thought it would be,” Miller said via Sports Illustrated. “I always wanted to go to Ohio State. I just needed to see it up close and personal.”

Ohio State has Brown in the class of 2027 and they’re the favorite to land five-star WR Jett Harrison in the class of 2028. The Buckeyes aren’t going to slow down at recruiting wide receivers because the program speaks for itself. Whether it was Hartline or now Hankton coaching the position in Columbus, the Buckeyes are going to do what they do. That’s sending wideouts to the NFL at a higher clip than any other school.

For folks worried about Miller’s commitment being too early, he had a simple and clear reason why he’s deciding now.

“Why wait on something that you already know?” Miller said via SI. “I’m very intentional. I’m not about to play games about my future.”
