Notre Dame football lands a high upside defender over an elite offer list, moves one step closer toward a historic DL class
Notre Dame football lands 2027 defensive lineman Segun Alexander. The Fighting Irish are one massive step toward a historic group.
Notre Dame football has just wrapped up its official visitor weekends. During the most recent event, the Fighting Irish hosted 2027 Rabun Gap (Ga.) Nacoochee defensive lineman Segun Alexander, an interesting player who was previously a member of the 2028 recruiting class. Once Alexander opted to reclassify, he quickly became a key target for the team.
Despite Texas A&M being considered the favorite going into the trip, head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive line coach Charlie Partridge knocked that official visit out of the park. The Fighting Irish quickly became the leaders for the talented defensive lineman. Alexander made his commitment on Tuesday and opted for Notre Dame over an outstanding offer list of options.
With the commitment of Alexander, Notre Dame continues an outstanding stretch of recruiting the defensive line. He joins 5-star EDGE Abraham Sesay, elite defensive tackle David Folorunsho, top-100 defensive end Aidan O’Neil, and 4-star pass rusher Jackson Vaughn, and that is already an elite group. There is now one remaining target left on the board.
All eyes turn to 2027 Chicago (Ill.) Brother Rice defensive tackle Brayden Parks. The Fighting Irish continue to push hard for the 6-3, 305-pound behemoth, with Oregon being the other top program to know. The Irish staff continues to feel confident with their chances of landing Parks. If they do, this group goes from elite to historic, an impressive introduction to Coach Partridge and his recruiting prowess.
Segun Alexander’s recruiting background
Alexander was considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms for the 2028 recruiting class, but that has changed since reclassifying. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Alexander currently sits as a three-star, the No. 515 overall player, the No. 63 defensive lineman, and the No. 63 player from the state of Georgia for the 2027 recruiting class. Those rankings will rise exponentially after a big senior season from Alexander.
If those rankings don’t impress you, and they probably don’t for now, Alexander’s offer list certainly will. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Miami, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Cal, Michigan State, West Virginia, UNC, Kansas, and Syracuse, among several others.
The 6-4, 290-pound defensive lineman put together a tremendous season in 2025. In 12 games, Alexander managed to collect 36 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks. Alexander also had 19 more quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, and another fumble recovery. His upside as a playmaking interior presence is extremely high on the college level.
