Penn State is losing out on an elite 2027 position player who could be a five-star by the time he gets on campus
The Penn State Nittany Lions are still recruiting well enough, all things considered.
The Penn State Nittany Lions missed out on 2027 wide receiver Deshawn Hall, a four-star talent from Prattville, Alabama, who committed to the Auburn Tigers over Penn State, Tennessee, Clemson, and Florida.
Hall is a 6’4, 190-pound receiver ranked as the No. 7 player in Alabama, the No. 20 wide receiver in the 2027 class, and No. 141 nationally. The Nittany Lions were in on him, but this one was never close.
Hall took five visits to Auburn, making it clear where his heart was throughout the process. Penn State had the second-most visits with two, but that gap tells you everything you need to know. Auburn won this recruitment by a landslide, and the Nittany Lions shouldn’t lose sleep over it. He’s an Alabama kid, and his dream is to probably play for Auburn.
What Penn State is losing
Hall has the potential to be a fringe five-star talent by the time he arrives on campus. He is that good. At 6’4 and 190 pounds with long arms and a strong build, he has the frame and athleticism to develop into a legitimate impact player at the next level. Auburn is getting a receiver who could climb the rankings significantly before he ever plays a college snap.
For Penn State, the miss stings a little, but it was never a realistic expectation given how heavily Hall leaned toward Auburn throughout the process.
Where the Nittany Lions stand in 2027 recruiting
Penn State currently holds the No. 21 recruiting class in the country and the No. 7 class in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions already have some weapons committed, including four-star wide receiver Landon Blum, running back Chukwuma Odoh, and running back Aiden Gibson. PSU desperately needs more receivers.
Head coach Matt Campbell has been doing a decent job on the recruiting trail given everything Penn State has been dealing with. The Nittany Lions are looking to improve drastically from where they finished last year, which was uncharacteristic for the program. Campbell’s first full recruiting cycle will tell us a lot about where this program is headed, and the early returns suggest he’s building something.
Losing Hall to Auburn isn’t ideal, but it was always Auburn’s recruitment to lose. Penn State has enough pieces in this class to keep building, and Campbell will have plenty of opportunities to add more talent before signing day.
