New report leaves the door open for Chaz Coleman to eventually play for the Tennessee Vols after being removed from the roster
Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman is no longer part of the Tennessee Volunteers football team, but his future with the program may not be over.
Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman was medically disqualified from the Tennessee Vols’ roster on Friday, which means he won’t be part of the team this fall.
The news comes after Coleman missed most of spring practice and didn’t participate in summer workouts with the rest of the team.
Coleman dealt with personal issues this offseason that caused him to be away from the team. He also reportedly dealt with the lingering effects from a head injury that he suffered last season at Penn State.
According to a report from CBS Sports, Coleman is remaining on scholarship at Tennessee after being medically disqualified.
Coleman was one of the Volunteers’ biggest transfer additions of the offseason. He’s viewed as a player with limitless upside who can be a game-changing pass rusher in the SEC when he’s locked in and focused on football.

Coleman won’t play for Tennessee in 2026, but that doesn’t mean his future with the Vols is 100 percent over.
The Athletic’s Manny Navarro suggested on Friday that there’s a chance Coleman could return down the road.
“Coleman is still technically on scholarship at Tennessee, and there’s a chance he could eventually rejoin the Volunteers,” wrote Navarro. “That doesn’t mean he’s getting paid in the meantime. Most, if not all, college athletes do not collect on revenue-sharing deals when they’re away from the team.”
No one knows at this point what the future holds for Coleman. But he’s obviously a talented player who could still make a major impact in college football if he decides to return to the sport fully focused.
Maybe he takes the 2026 season off, gets his personal issues in order, and decides he wants to return to the football field. We have no idea if that will happen, but he’s just 19 years old — it wouldn’t be fair to close the book on his football career just yet.
It’s important to remember that Coleman is a 19-year-old before he’s a football player. People go through things — life isn’t always perfect — and we don’t know the full story of what Coleman is dealing with. Regardless of his future in football, I’m rooting for the guy to find his way and be successful in life.
