The Oklahoma Sooners have some of the greatest college football players of all time. When you look at the ones who have gone on to the NFL to have successful careers, it’s even more impressive. One of the more recent ones who could be etching his name into the Hall of Fame is Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Johnson could go down as one of the greatest right tackles of all time. But it didn’t always feel that way. His former coach, the great Bob Stoops, helped him get there.

Bob Stoops helped turn Lane Johnson into the player he is today

“I came in as a tight end, played d-end a bit,” Johnson said on the Red Dirt Media Podcast. “Was a big fan of the weight room… after I moved to tackle, coach Stoops came and said, ‘Hey man, you got a chance to be a top 10 pick,’ and I was coming from someone who didn’t play a lot; to this guy just gave me the biggest vote of confidence. I played right tackle my junior year.

“I knew in my senior year I had a chance. When I was a zero-star recruit, there were a lot of unknowns. I had a full ride to TCU, and I was going to take that until it fell through. Coach Stoops and Coach Wilson are the ones who got me here.”

Lane Johnson’s Hall of Fame-worthy career thus far is pretty impressive. Johnson is a two-time Super Bowl Champion with the Philadelphia Eagles, a six-time Pro Bowler, and a five-time All-Pro, whether it be first or second team. He’s accomplished just about everything an offensive lineman can, and he will surely have a gold jacket on one day if he keeps this up.

The Oklahoma Sooners were once known as a team that recruited and produced elite offensive linemen.
