The 2026 FIFA World Cup has taken ahold of the sports world to the point that Tom Brady is renouncing to the title of the greatest comeback in sports history.

On Tuesday, Brady had the perfect reaction to Argentina’s wild victory 3-2 over Egypt in the World Cup’s Round of 16.

Tom Brady takes a bow at Messi’s comeback

Brady is the author of one of the most legendary careers in NFL history, and one of his most iconic moments was a 28-3 comeback in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons. In his view, that takes a second place to Argentina’s comeback on Tuesday (which by the way, poetically happened in the Falcons’ stadium).

Egypt, which entered the game as large underdogs against the reigning world champions, took an early 2-0 lead with goals in minutes 15′ and 67′. To make matters worse for Argentina, in the first half, legend Lionel Messi failed a penalty kick.

Fast forward to the end of the match, Argentina emerged victorious 3-2. How? Goals at minutes 79, 83, and the game-defining score in stoppage time (90’+3′). It was a brilliant display of football by Argentina to advance to the quarterfinals.

“Yeah, so that might top 28-3,” Brady posted on his X account.

How did that even happen?

Many soccer fans jokingly say that 2-0 is the sport’s most deceiving score. On Tuesday, it was an undeniable truth. The reality is Egypt let what should have been a win slip away. Up two to nothing, the team’s substitutions focused on creating a line of five players on defense.

It was a gritty performance from Argentina as it blitzed Egypt relentlessly for 13 minutes. Despite the revamped aggression in its attack, Argentina played football while staying calm, which was too much for a panicked Egyptian defense.

I give the edge to Brady’s Patriots

It was a historic win for Argentina. According to ESPN Insights, it was the first time Argentina ever comes back from a 2+ goal deficit in the World Cup.

Now, as far as which comeback was better, I gotta say I believe Brady is giving too much credit here. Doing what Argentina did in under 15 minutes is otherworldly. But the Patriots’ collective effort to come back against the Falcons happened with a Lombardi Trophy on the line.

But to be honest, that matters very little right now. The best part of Brady’s post is this is another example of how successful this year’s World Cup has been. Games have been electric, and the entire world can’t stop watching.

And that leads to some GOATs talking about other GOATs.
