Lane Kiffin could give LSU fans a big reason to smile before taking the state at SEC Media Days later this month
LSU head coach Lane Kiffin is poised to give Tigers football fans a big reason to smile before taking the stage at SEC Media Days later this month.
LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin is scheduled to take the stage at SEC Media Days on July 23.
And there’s a decent chance that Kiffin will have given LSU football fans a big reason to smile by that date.
Kiffin and the Tigers are currently in the midst of trying to flip 2027 five-star wide receiver Easton Royal from the Texas Longhorns.
Royal, 5-foot-11/214 pounds from New Orleans, LA, has been committed to Texas since last November. He’s rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation.
LSU is trying to keep Royal in state, and despite a push from Texas quarterback Arch Manning, the Tigers have given the five-star recruit plenty to think about (including a big NIL deal).
And he could be making a decision by next week.
“A well-placed source believes that the Tigers are being very aggressive on the NIL front to keep the No. 4 prospect in the Rivals300 in-state,” reported Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman on Friday. “Some within his circle believe a decision could come as soon as next week.”
Spiegelman also reported that sources close to Royal say he is “torn.”
Ultimately, it feels like it would be a surprise if Royal chose to stick with Texas over the in-state Tigers, but you never know in recruiting.
It’s worth noting, however, that LSU running back commit Trey Martin recently made a comment that indicated Royal is already in the boat with the Tigers.
“The best in the Boot stay in the Boot,” said Martin. “We have a lot of great guys like Pop (Houston) and Easton (Royal). We’re going to build a great class… They (LSU) don’t play. I know they’re gonna win, and they might even win a national championship this year.”
Royal has the talent to be an early-round NFL draft pick. And I just don’t see how he can pass up the opportunity to be the next Ja’Marr Chase/Justin Jefferson/Brian Thomas Jr-type receiver that stays home and carries on the elite LSU wide receiver tradition.
