Cleveland Browns’ key free agent signing looks even better after what one AFC executive had to say

We are weeks away from training camp and it’ll be the first look at a Browns’ starting offensive line all together. One key piece the Browns brought in is already looking like a smart move with no games played yet.

We’re just over a couple of weeks out before the Cleveland Browns will join together in Berea to begin training camp.

The start of training camp will be key for the Browns, not only for the starting quarterback battle but also to get a look at what the offensive line is set to look like.

Cleveland knows four of its offensive line starters will be with rookie Spencer Fano, Zion Johnson, Elgton Jenkins, and Tytus Howard.

It’s all about finding the fifth starter, and whoever holds down the fifth spot could impact where the Browns decide to put Jenkins. The former Green Bay Packers interior offensive lineman was a key free agent signing for the Browns on a two-year, $24 million deal.

The Browns’ signing of OL Elgton Jenkins is already sounding like a steal

Jenkins can play guard or center with his best position at the guard spot. However, his versatility along the offensive line has the door open to him playing either guard or center potentially.

ESPN recently revealed its top 10 interior offensive linemen voted on by players, coaches, and executives around the league. Jenkins didn’t make the top 10 but was just on the outside as an honorable mention.

“I’m surprised he didn’t have much trade value,” an anonymous AFC executive said via ESPN. “I know he’s had durability issues, but he’s a really quality player who can play all over the line.”

Cleveland could be looking at starting Parker Brailsford at center if he’s ready as a rookie. A less likely option is for Luke Wypler to be the starting center. If neither of those players can be the starting center for the Browns, then it’ll be Jenkins. Jenkins was the Packers’ starting center in 2025, but has been mostly a left guard otherwise. The 30-year-old veteran has over 300 snaps played at both left tackle and right guard in his seven-year career.

The Browns wanted Jenkins because of his versatility along the offense’s line and they knew he could fill multiple roles depending on what their need was upfront. $12 million a season for Jenkins may look like a bargain in the end for Cleveland.
