The Florida Gators now have an official start to their fall camp under new head coach Jon Sumrall. According to Gators Online’s Zach Abolverdi, the first practice will be on Wednesday, August 5th. Sumrall will also be meeting with the media the day before, which will be the first time we’ve heard from him in front of the media since the Spring Game.

The Gators will also be hosting two scrimmages: Saturday, August 15th, and Saturday, August 22nd. Those scrimmages are going to be huge for the Gators, figuring out key questions, including who will be the starting quarterback.

Florida Gators announce key dates for fall camp

We know the Gators have an interesting schedule, with their first two games at home against Florida Atlantic and Campbell. Fall camp will be a great lead in to those games, which should both be winable.

There are some interesting things with fall camp that will be worth monitoring, with the first being who starts at quarterback. Aaron Philo is the likely starter for the Gators after transferring in from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He is a talented game manager who can attack all three levels of the field. What he doesn’t have in arm strength, he has in intelligence.

The other main option is Tramell Jones Jr. He played extensively in two games last season as a true freshman, while also earning the backup quarterback job from day one. Jones has a stronger arm and a higher athletic upside. That decision will be huge for Sumrall.

The other aspect to look at will be injuries. There were a lot of injuries last year in fall camp, including star wide receiver Dallas Wilson, quarterback DJ Lagway, and defensive tackle Caleb Banks.

Rest easy, Gators fans, we are just three weeks away.
