Prediction on Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders could come true just a couple of weeks into training camp
Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson battling for the Browns’ starting quarterback job is the story to watch for training camp. One Sanders prediction recently dropped that could end up reality despite being a surprise.
The Cleveland Browns have a quarterback battle set to continue in training camp between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders that’ll surely be the talk of the town when things start up on July 28.
Watson and Sanders have competed for the job against one another through offseason OTAs. When Todd Monken first took the head coaching job, he thought he might have a starter named before training came.
It didn’t come to fruition and Cleveland will choose its starter between Watson and Sanders sometime in August.
Shedeur Sanders has made this a battle he may win
Watson is the high-dollar quarterback that the Browns have to pay one more season no matter what. It doesn’t matter if he’s playing or on the bench, the money is his. Therefore, the Browns have no real reason to start him, which is partly why Sanders is competing for the job.
Sanders was recently predicted by Bleacher Report to win the job, which could very well happen. Sanders has kept this battle close through OTAs and Watson was never able to take off with the starting job. Part of it is because Watson just hasn’t been impressive enough to do so, but the other part is the growth Sanders is showing heading into Year 2.
Watson is working his way back from a full season missed, while Sanders ended the season as the team’s starter last year. Sanders had a 3-4 record last year while Watson was 1-6 his last time out in 2024. Decision-making was a key issue for Sanders last year when he had 10 interceptions to seven touchdown passes.
Best case scenario for the Browns is for the youth in the room (Sanders) to win out over a veteran like Watson who is on the final year of his contract. Watson has played in just 19 games over four seasons with the Browns and time has shown they can’t depend on him long term.
If the recent past with the Browns has shown us anything, it’s that multiple quarterbacks will play for them over the 17-game season. Watson feels like the leader for the job right now, but again, I would not be sleeping on Sanders coming in and taking the job.
