Alabama Crimson Tide beats out Big Ten powerhouse to secure a commitment that kills two birds with one stone in the 2028 class

The Alabama Crimson Tide don’t have a ton to show for the 2027 class, but the Capstone remains steadfast in its approach for the best class in the 2028 cycle, and Alabama just took another step towards that goal.

The Alabama Crimson Tide secured a massive commitment from 4-star offensive tackle Anthony Blalock Jr., vaulting to the No. 1 recruiting class for the 2028 cycle. Blalock, ranked as the best offensive lineman in Ohio for the 2028 class, chose Alabama over the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, giving the Crimson Tide a significant out-of-state recruiting victory.

The truth is, this is about more than one prospect. Blalock brings the kind of positional versatility that programs covet. There is a lot of belief that he can play guard, offensive tackle, and potentially even center at the next level. That kind of flexibility along the offensive line is rare, and it makes the commitment even more valuable for Alabama as it continues to stockpile talent for 2028.

Why Alabama is prioritizing 2028 over 2027

There has been plenty of discourse surrounding Alabama’s 2027 recruiting class, which appears relatively quiet compared to recent cycles. The Crimson Tide, however, have been transparent about their approach. Alabama feels comfortable with what it accomplished in 2025 and 2026, with both classes finishing in the top six nationally. On top of that, the program believes it addressed roster needs through the transfer portal this past January.

So the immediate question becomes whether the 2027 class will remain small by design. The indication is yes. Alabama appears content to target a handful of high-profile names and potentially flip commitments closer to National Signing Day rather than cast a wide net.

Blalock adds to a growing 2028 foundation

Blalock is the latest addition to what is shaping up to be a special 2028 class for the Crimson Tide. Pulling a top-tier offensive lineman out of Ohio, away from programs with strong regional ties, signals that Alabama’s recruiting reach remains as potent as ever under this staff.

The bottom line is that Alabama is making a calculated bet. Rather than spread resources thin across multiple cycles, the Crimson Tide are loading up on 2028 talent while trusting the roster they have already built through previous recruiting hauls and the transfer portal. It is early in the 2028 cycle, but landing the best offensive lineman in Ohio is the kind of foundation piece that sets a class apart. If Alabama continues at this pace, the rest of college football will be chasing.
