The Oklahoma Sooners appear to be in the driver’s seat for 2028 wide receiver recruit Carson LaCombe out of San Antonio, Texas.

LaCombe, a 90.98 composite-rated prospect, ranks as a top-130 player nationally according to ESPN, a top-20 player at his position, and a top-12 player in the state of Texas. After a standout showing at OU’s recent camp and visit weekend, the Sooners have separated themselves from a talented group of suitors, including Ohio State, Texas A&M, Florida State, and Mississippi State.

“Oklahoma talks to me nearly every day,” LaCombe told Rivals. “They are really taking the time to show me all aspects of the school — not just football. I really like the staff and Coach (Emmett) Jones, the receivers coach.”

The LSU Tigers also appear to be a team he could end up committing to. There is a connection there that Oklahoma simply does not have. LaCombe has family ties to Louisiana and has been in conversations with members of the LSU staff since June 15.

“LSU is up there because they put out true top receivers in the nation every year,” he said. “My dad’s entire side of his family is from Louisiana, so I’ve been going to LSU games all my life.”

LaCombe’s recruitment heating up this summer

LaCombe has visited only two schools so far: Oklahoma and Ohio State. He’s also camped at OU, Ohio State, Texas, and a few other programs. He was a top performer at the Rivals camp in Nashville, and by all accounts, he’s been even more dynamic working out at college camps throughout the summer.

What separates the Sooners from the pack right now is the relationship. Oklahoma has stayed in constant communication with Lacombe throughout the process, and the feeling appears to be mutual. He seems to genuinely enjoy the program and the people around it.

Why LaCombe matters for OU’s 2028 class

The Sooners have only one commitment in their 2028 recruiting class right now: quarterback Trey Tagliaferri. Landing a second commitment would be significant on its own, but adding a player of LaCombe’s caliber at wide receiver would set a tone for the rest of the cycle.

LaCombe already has the physical tools you want at the position. He has the size, the hands, and the route-running ability to project as an elite college-wide receiver. The question is how much further he can develop those traits between now and when he arrives on campus.

That’s a good problem to have. When you’re evaluating a prospect who already checks the major boxes as a high school underclassman, the ceiling becomes the conversation. LaCombe has the foundation. Now it’s about refinement and continued growth.

Oklahoma is the clear front-runner, but nothing is decided yet. Ohio State remains in the picture, and programs like Texas A&M and Florida State could make a push as the process moves forward. LaCombe has time on his side as a 2028 recruit, and plenty can change between now and a commitment.

That said, the Sooners have done the work to put themselves in this position. Consistent communication, strong camp impressions, and a genuine connection go a long way in recruiting. If OU can close on LaCombe, it would give its 2028 class a significant boost at a premium position.
