The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition is going to be a very interesting one. Kyler Murray being the incoming veteran going up against the young incumbent in J.J. McCarthy creates an interesting dynamic.
We don’t know how the competition will go, but many believe that Murray is going to win the starting job. The one interesting element to the conversation is how long the competition will end up going. The prevailing thought is the competition will end somewhere around August 21st, which will be two days after joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition could last longer than we expect
Could the Vikings’ quarterback competition go longer than we initially believed? NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport hinted on The Insiders Monday night that it could go right up to the start of the season.
“For the Minnesota Vikings, no doubt one of the biggest storylines of all of training camp, they have their quarterback battle as well. Is it Kyle O’Murray? Is it J.J. McCarthy? That is going to be going on throughout camp, through the preseason games, right up to the start of the season. Obviously, has wide-ranging ramifications for the organization, but who ends up being their starter will go a long way in determining just how these Minnesota Vikings end up doing.”
This goes against what we think the Vikings will do with the quarterback competition. Going all the way up to the start of the season flys right into the face of preparing for the start of the season. Murray has already expressed concern about the lack of reps when trying to learn the offense, and if they end up waiting until the last second to pick their guy, that’s not great process.
It’s hard for me to believe that the Vikings will go that late to make their decision, especially since it won’t do their offense any good. That will be the biggest factor in who starts at quarterback, and, even with Rapoport’s speculation, don’t be surprised if the competition ends at those joint practices.
If O’Connell does wait until the week of the regular season, I will have serious questions about what he is doing.
