Jahmyr Gibbs’ return to Lions practice could be the biggest sign yet of what’s coming
Jahmyr Gibbs is back on the practice field for the Detroit Lions. No contract announcement yet, and he’s not a full participant yet, but this is a pretty significant development after everything that’s unfolded over the last week.
Some big news out of Allen Park today. Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is suited up and back on the field at practice, taking reps during the early portion of walk-throughs. Once practice really got going, he went off to the side with trainers. There was some talk of some back stuff coming into camp. Surely that’s not a big thing. But him being out there definitely is.
There hasn’t been any word on a new contract just yet, but this is a very good sign that a deal could be getting done as early as today. You have to understand the context here. The running back market has been loaded with moving parts this offseason. The Bijan Robinson extension, the De’Von Achane deal, Jonathan Taylor’s situation. There were so many dominoes falling at the position that it just made sense Gibbs’ deal wasn’t going to happen right away.
I just wrote a whole article about why Lions fans shouldn’t freak out about the timeline, and now it looks like things are about to come together. Detroit could theoretically announce a new deal for Gibbs as early as today, and we’re going to know what the numbers look like.
The good thing is that Gibbs didn’t miss a beat getting back out there. He’s taking some light reps, he’s in full pads, and the Lions are moving forward with their full roster at training camp.
Gibbs has been one of the most dynamic playmakers in the NFL since Detroit drafted him, and locking him up long-term has been a priority for general manager Brad Holmes. The fact that he’s back on the field before any deal has been officially announced tells you a lot about where both sides are in negotiations. This isn’t a holdout situation. This is a guy who wants to be here and a front office that wants to keep him.
Let’s see what the deal looks like when it’s officially announced. For now, everybody calm down. Jahmyr Gibbs is back, and the Lions are officially fully back at training camp.
