The Ohio State Buckeyes have landed the top quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class.
5-star quarterback Christopher Vargas, the No. 6 overall recruit and No. 1 quarterback according to 247Sports Composite, announced his commitment to Ohio State on Saturday. The 6-foot-4.5, 195-pound signal-caller from St. John’s Prep in Massachusetts picked the Buckeyes over Alabama, Oregon, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, and Texas A&M in a big recruiting win for Ryan Day’s program.
Ohio State hasn’t landed a top quarterback recruit in a couple of cycles since Tavian St. Clair in the 2025 class. Vargas changes that in a major way, giving the Buckeyes their guy at the most important position in the sport for the 2028 cycle.
Buckeyes made Vargas their main target
Ohio State recruited Vargas hard for the last year, making him the program’s primary target at quarterback in the class. Vargas was on campus back in June, camping at Ohio State and taking part in 7-on-7 matchups. He visited campus multiple times to build a relationship with Day and the Buckeyes’ staff, and that investment paid off Saturday.
Vargas is a pocket passer with prototypical size. While he needs to add some weight, he has the frame to fill out around 220 pounds at the college level. The combination of arm talent and physical tools made him the clear No. 1 quarterback in the class for a reason.
Vargas joins what’s becoming a strong 2028 recruiting class for the Buckeyes. Ohio State already had 5-star wide receiver Jett Harrison and top-5 running back Elijah Newman-Hall on the board. Adding the top quarterback in the country gives the class a foundational trio of skill players to build around.
The commitment comes early, and Ohio State will have to hold Vargas’ pledge for well over a year. That’s the name of the game with quarterbacks in today’s recruiting landscape. When a player of Vargas’ caliber wants to decide this early, you take the commitment.
Clarity at quarterback across two classes for the Buckeyes
The timing of Vargas’ commitment is noteworthy. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Buckeyes got the clarity they needed in the 2027 class when Brady Edmunds made it clear he would be sticking with his commitment to Ohio State and would not be flipping to UCLA. With Edmunds locked in for 2027 and Vargas now committed for 2028, Day has his quarterback pipeline in order for the foreseeable future.
It’s a big recruiting win for the Buckeyes to cap off their first week of fall camp. Time will tell how the rest of the 2028 class shapes up, but securing the No. 1 quarterback in the country is a strong foundation to build on.
